September

"The breezes taste,
Of apple peel.
The air is full
Of smells to feel-
Ripe fruit, old footballs,
Burning brush,
New books, erasers,
Chalk, and such.
The bee, his hive
Well-honeyed hums,
And Mother cuts
Chrysanthemums.
Like plates washed clean
With suds, the days
Are polished with
A morning haze.
                                   ~ John Updike, September

I've never read this poem until today. I think it sums September up quite nicely, don't you? I'm off to school this morning to finish getting the classroom ready, and after that I intend to enjoy every last second of the long weekend. Tuesday will be here soon, and September will be in full swing. I'm not sure I'm ready. But I am looking forward to it.

  6. I love September! It's my birthday month, the start of school (the return of structure to my highly unstructured summer life), the beginning of fall and all the beautiful things that come with fall, the cooling of super-hot temperatures, the occasional fall thunderstorm, blankets, tea, movies, books, journals, leaves, life. I don't know why, but fall just makes me happy, and this poem did, too. Happy September! :)

  8. what a sweet poem! it reminds me of CA novembers, when things start cooling off and leaves start changing colors. one of my favorite memories from last fall was sipping mulled cider in front of our fire pit. i can't wait to do that again!
